FINAL OUTCOME

Amongst all the opportunities and brainstorming the following designs have been finalized and detailed sketches and prototypes have been made.

DESIGN 1

This is a trunk box with two flaps the front one opens to forms a sitting and the top flap opens to provide a storage space for the tools of the cobbler on the flap opening itself there are compartments for the same purpose. Also there is a plank that slides out from the trunk, which works like a table top to keep the equipments used most.

DESIGN 2

IMG_1284

This is a cylindrical container that has four door openings inside are circular planks which serve as a storage space to keep the tools and equipments. On the top is a circular base which glides and then on a hydrolic channel the base goes up and provides shade to the cobbler working under it.

DESIGN 3

This design is a briefcase trolley with wheels. Its easily portable from place to place. It eases the cobbler from carrying the load on his shoulders and also it is a better approach with concern of safety of the equipments as he can take it along with him. Upon opening the flap of the trolley are two planks that come out as drawers allowing easy access for the cobbler to the equipments and tools. The planks work o

IDEATION

The aim was to provide a good, positive working environment to the cobblers. Wherein they have a proper workstation with a comfortable seating space, sufficient space for storing the equipments , and a convenient approach to port the things with self from place to place if possible.

In order to fulfill the requirements the following parameters were kept in mind: A shed over the head, a convertible platform to work on on to prevent working by bending to the ground to avoid health issues. Also a moving vehicle that can be taken around from place to place and work from there itself.

Opportunity Area

After selecting and studying the Micro area we had to find out our individual opportunity area to design or re-design.

I chose to further work on cobblers/shoe menders.

OPPORTUNITY AREA : Cobblers/Shoe Menders

PROBLEM I AM TRYING TO SOLVE ?

To provide a better working environment, comfortable working conditions and easier methods of working for the cobblers.

WHO IS IT A PROBLEM FOR ?

It is a problem for the mender

* Health issues- excessive and rigorous manual labor work, drastic climatic conditions.

* Does not invite many customers.

* Mode and environment of working not comfortable, set up and layout adding to the discomfort.

Process of working and equipments.

WHY IS IT WORTH SOLVING ?

* It is worth solving because the shoe menders/cobblers in India mostly work on road sides with improper temporary and uncomfortable sets ups/layouts, in diverse and drastically varying climatic conditions.

INFORMATION I NEED TO BE ABLE TO SOLVE?

  • Time taken to attend one customer
  • Process of working and technique
  • Equipments used
  • Physical Comfort provided to the mender while working and by the equipments used

ABOUT THE MAIN MARKET ENTRY

Being a market entry, it does not have the kind of vendors the main, Nehru Place market has, even though there are several people who place their business there. The most interesting economic fact of this area is that there are no vendors offering the same kind of products or services. The small area has its own equilibrium regarding its economy. Also, the crowd that it attracts is so diverse that is difficult to categorize. The place is an old construction with broken fencing and unorganized vendors. There are people sitting in the area while there’s supposed to be continuous movement in the area and people performing activities that is are not meant for that place. Example: people sitting on the steps meant for access to the market and smoking.

Selection of the Micro Area

After the rigorous and detailed study of the macro area, we had to select a micro area from within that macro area to further work upon. The area should be selected on the criteria that what we think has maximum scope for design intervention.

So after putting our minds together we decided upon the “MAIN MARKET ENTRY OF NEHRU PLACE” as our Micro area.

A particular area within our macro site which has all the diversity in itself is the market entry. With different kinds of vendors sitting on different corners of the area and people of different occupations and age groups passing by, loitering around and utilizing the area with their own purposes, this area became the one we preferred most for our micro site. The area provides abundance opportunity areas for design intervention, which our project is all about.

MODEL OF THE MACRO AREA

Model making

A model has been designed and constructed for the better visual understanding of the scale of the plot, structure and dimensions of the buildings and the materials used. The map of the area is scaled down to 1:200 and the model has been constructed on the basis of that.

The following buildings have been made by the following ways:

EROS CORPORATE TOWER

The main tall structure has been made using sun board (2mm). Blue OHP sheets have been used to replace the blue tinted glass, and lines drawn with OHP markers to show silicon fillings and the grey paint on the sun board representing grey metallic Aluminium Compressed Panel sheets. Black toothpicks have been used to make the fencing and plastic planters for bushes.

SATYAM

The multiplex has been made using sun board. Grey plastic sheet used to show the ACP sheets, orange conical barricades made using M-seal, and tooth and paper for the lamp post.

MAIN MARKET ENTRY

Sun board again had been used to construct this area. Layers of sun board have been pasted to construct stairs and the entry way.

CHIRANJIV TOWER

Sun Board again is the base used to construct this building painted a faint yellow and a pale green using acrylic paint.

Near it two small miniatures, one of the taxi stand and the second of a cigarette shop has been made and placed.

These buildings have been pasted on an MDF board using bond 007 and feviquick. Sandpaper (no. 600) used to show roads and Sun board used to make the dividers.

Presentation Preparation

Over the weekend we prepared for the presentation that we were supposed to present on Monday to our Design Concept tutor. The aim of this presentation is to briefly yet in detail explain our observation, understanding, learning and research of the Macro area.

For the presentation we prepared a Powerpoint presentation in that we inlcuded 2 mind maps made on http://www.coggle.com depicting our views of nehru place before the visit and another on after the visit, we showed our macro area described and explained the visual, social and economic, and merchandise aspects. We also made a map of our macro area with proper scaling and measurements.

NEHRU PLACE- VISIT 4

For this day also we planned the same but this time we went along together understanding the areas the other pair also worked upon and along side photographing our macro area and observations. Our observation and research sums upto to the following in detail:

EROS CORPORATE TOWER

IMG_5028
Eros corporate tower is a 16 storey high, leading commercial and business tower, situated right opposite the Nehru Place Metro Station providing easy connectivity and access to the employees and people utilizing the building. Adjacent to it is a seven levels multi-storey payable parking.

Numerous Companies like: Microsoft, Barclays Bank, ENI India, Jetro, BT India Pvt Ltd., Sinosteel India, Suzlon, Sjitz India, HDFC Ergo, Axis Bank, Russell Reynold, Regus, Korean Exim Bank, OOCL India, Royal China, etc. operate their businesses from this tower.

People visiting the building are high profiled, elite, white collared job employees, entrepreneurs and public visiting to access the banks.

The building provides a safe environment because of its tight security. Also an excellent parking spot easing the people visiting the building. Despite these facilities cars are parked outside the buildings and drivers sitting on the pavement curbs right in front of a “No Parking” signage board.

SATYAM CINEPLEX
IMG_5062
It is a cinema multiplex theatre correctly situated between the Eros Corporate Tower and the entry to the Nehru Place main market.

It is an entertainment hub for employees working in offices around during their free time, public going to the market, students from colleges near by, residents living in the radius and candidates visiting the visa office.

There are eating joints like Dominos, Pizza Hut, Subway, etc., within the same building. However there is one drawback, the entry to these joints is very narrow, conjusting the flow. The main road extending from Eros gets narrower and there are orange conical barricades that separates the pathway from the main road.

The buildings utilities correctly facilitate the users entertainment needs.

NEHRU PLACE MARKET – MAIN ENTRY

It is located adjacent and touching to Satyam and on the other side is an open parking space. There is a six steps staircase that climbs up to the entry space. Upon landing there are vendors selling items and services. There is a small seating provision under the trees for the public.

CHIRANJIV TOWER

IMG-20160314-WA0006
Chiranjiv Tower is a 16 floors high, official building. It has old methods and techniques of construction used.  It is a pale yellow and pale green tinted building but at the bottom is a red-bricked facade.

Chiranjiv Tower rents outs its floors to companies and firms to set up offices to function their trade there.

Near the building, on the pavement is a tent which is a provision by the Government of India for the taxi drivers to rest and take a break and a cigarette shop.

NEHRU PLACE- VISIT 3

March 9, 2016

OBSERVATION DAY

Starting our research from Eros Corporate tower we ended up at Chiranjiv Tower. Observing the visual, socio-economic, merchandise cultures across our Macro area on an overview. We saw that there was a huge diversity within a span of 2 metres. And the construction quality and architecture style also varied.

We went around the area divided ourselves amongst pairs and split the area to research upon. Vani and Faka did the mapping and measurements of the area, Avni and Prachi did worked upon the Main market entry to Chiranjiv Tower and, Angad and I were observing from Eros Corporate Tower to Satyam.
